LOS ANGELES
The Times Editorial Board has endorsed Hydee Feldstein Soto for Los Angeles city attorney as voters prepare for the June 7 primary election. With Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer termed out of office, voters must choose from among seven candidates to fill the role.
The position of city attorney carries a wide range of responsibilities, requiring a unique blend of legal expertise, policy insight and leadership. The city attorney serves as legal counsel to the mayor, City Council and city departments, advising officials on what actions they can and cannot take — and often what they should or should not do.
Because policymakers are not obligated to follow the office’s legal advice, the role demands thoughtfulness, persuasiveness and creativity. The next city attorney must help shape effective and humane policies while navigating the legal complexities of governing one of the nation’s largest cities.
